How to Plan New Year’s Eve in Times Square
Arrive Early, It Fills Fast:
Security and crowd control start early on New Year’s Eve. People often begin lining up by late morning (around 10 AM to early afternoon) to secure the best viewing spots. Official street access points generally open around 3 PM, however, by that time many spots are already filling up with those who arrived earlier. Once a viewing area reaches capacity, it remains closed and no more spectators are admitted.
Official Entry Points & “Doors” Opening:
Viewer entry into the barricaded Times Square area typically starts around 3 PM, when the NYPD opens the designated access points, however, keep in mind that people are already ahead in line long before that and security screenings begin earlier.
Pro Tip: If you aim for a prime viewing spot near One Times Square, the earlier you arrive (even BEFORE 12 PM!!!), the better your chances!
Subway & Transportation Logistics:
Some stations close early due to crowd control. For example, subway entrances at Times Sq-42 St and 49 St often close well before the evening as area crowds swell, so planning alternate routes or exits can help you avoid being stranded outside the viewing zones.
Access points to enter Times Square’s area:
– 49th Street from 6th and 8th Avenues
– 52nd Street from 6th and 8th Avenues
– 56th Street from 6th and 8th Avenues
Find the Best View:
The Times Square Ball Drop happens atop One Times Square (43rd Street & 7th Avenue). Some of the best viewing areas for New Year’s Eve in Times Square are where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect near 45th Street. In general, you can see the ball drop and the giant video screens at One Times Square between 42nd and 48th Streets, with additional screens throughout the area to help you follow the countdown more clearly.
Avoid Scams:
There’s no such thing as a pass or ticket that guarantees street access to Times Square once the area is full. Don’t fall for it. Entry after closure is only allowed if you have a reservation for a restaurant, hotel, or organized NYE party inside the secured zone.
Dress Warmly:
Layers are essential. Think thermal layers, gloves, hats, and a heated vest (BRILLIANT HACK!!!). You’ll feel the cold even packed into a crowd for hours on New Year’s Eve in Times Square. I share all my go-to pieces (the ones I actually wear every winter) in my NYC Winter Must-Haves guide.
What to Bring (and What Not to Bring)
Pack light. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed.
Bring only the essentials: phone or camera, a mini portable charger, wallet, snacks, one small bottle of water, and hand or foot warmers, all in a light tote bag – very NYC style.
Leave anything bulky or unnecessary at home, it will only slow you down at security.
Times Square New Year’s Eve Rules & Security
Security is very strict on New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Expect police checkpoints, bag inspections, and controlled entry into designated viewing areas. Re-entry is not allowed, so once you’re inside, you’re in for the night. Alcohol is not permitted: drinking in public is illegal in NYC, no exceptions. Follow NYPD instructions closely, as access points can close at any time once areas reach capacity.
Bathroom Tips for New Year’s Eve in Times Square
This is one of the biggest realities of spending New Year’s Eve in Times Square. There are no public bathrooms inside the viewing areas, and most nearby businesses restrict restroom access to customers only. Plan ahead and go before entering the secured zones.
Pro tip: many people wear diapers 😉 Not glamorous, but very real.

After hours of waiting, cold weather, and crowds, these final tips can make or break your New Year’s Eve in Times Square.
• Arrive with patience. Get ready to wait for hours! Spending New Year’s Eve in Times Square means a long night, with very little movement once you’re inside the viewing areas.

Is celebrating NYE in Times Square Worth It? 🤔
Everyone who’s done it says the same thing: “It was amazing… but I wouldn’t do it again.”
My personal take? It depends.
Luca and I celebrated New Year’s Eve back in 2011 in a massive crowd (Las Vegas, not NYC), and we’d never do it that way again. It can be an unforgettable bucket-list experience, but only if you’re truly up for the challenge. Cold. Crowds. Waiting. A lot of waiting.

When I first moved to NYC in 2007, we actually tried to get to Times Square for New Year’s Eve with friends. We had no idea about the rules, barricades, or arrival times I’ve just shared here. We took the subway, only to find the closest stations closed. We got off near Central Park, were stopped by police, and I still remember the look on their faces, half amused, half sympathetic… like “oh wow… you really have no idea.” – LOL!
They kindly suggested we go to Central Park instead, because there was simply no way we’d make it into Times Square that night.

That moment stuck with me. And since then, hearing the same refrain over and over (“amazing, but never again”) I never seriously attempted it.
Until last year.
For the first time, thanks to my press pass, I experienced New Year’s Eve in Times Square from the inside. I arrived around 9 PM, entered through a dedicated media access point, and stood in a privileged viewing area usually closed to the public. And I honestly had the time of my life!!! 🤩
The energy was electric. Contagious!!!
People from all over the world, standing together for hours, bonding, dancing, screaming, celebrating. Strangers turning into friends, everyone feeling part of something bigger than themselves. In that moment, I finally understood why people line up since early morning. The excitement. The anticipation. The shared joy. It’s powerful.
So… is New Year’s Eve in Times Square worth it?
If you’re a first-timer, love iconic moments, don’t mind the cold or crowds, and are ready to endure long hours for one unforgettable night: YES, it absolutely is.
And for the record? I’m going back for NYE 2026. I loved it, and I might even be a little hooked – LOL.
