The Great Elephant Migration just unveiled (last Friday, Sept. 6, at 4pm) at Gansevoort Plaza in the Meatpacking District, followed by the blessing of the elephants.
100 stunning handcrafted Indian elephant sculptures arrived in NYC to promote wildlife conservation, indigenous artistry, and harmonious coexistence.
Some of the insights shared during the unveiling and blessing ceremony.
- Elephants have been on the planet for over 8 million of years, and have coexisted with humans even in busy plantations.
- Despite India’s human population doubling since 1980, elephants, tigers, and rhinos have also doubled, showcasing the extraordinary harmony between people and wildlife in India.
- If humans can coexist with the world’s largest land mammals, we can surely live in harmony with one another!!!
- India and NYC are not so different: they both celebrate diversity and beautiful unity. .
Healing Through Art: Sculptures Made from Invasive Lantana Camara
These sculptures are crafted by indigenous artisans from dried Lantana camara – a toxic weed harming wildlife habitats – to symbolize HEALING. By transforming this invasive material into art, the elephants represent restoration and resilience, aiming to raise $10 million to support conservation efforts, restore forests, and protect migratory species.
A Coast-to-Coast Journey
Following their NYC debut, the elephants will journey from the East to the West Coast for one year and one month, stopping in Miami, Blackfeet Nation, Jackson Hole, and Los Angeles. This tour has already raised $1 million in the U.S., making it the largest sustainable indigenous enterprise in India.
